Gender stereotypes in advertising
1) Find three adverts featuring women that are from the 1950s or 1960s. Save the images to your Media folder as jpegs and then import them into your blog post. Hint: You may wish to look at car, perfume or cleaning products but can use any product you wish.
2) Find three adverts featuring women that are from post-2000. Save the images to your Media folder as jpegs and then import them into your blog post.
3) What stereotypes of women can you find in the 1950s and 1960s adverts? Give specific examples.
In my second advert, the woman is portrayed to be looking very nice and washing clothes at the same time. Tis example is meant to portray women as housewives that always have to look nice. However in my first advert, the man is seen to work for military or the army. This shows that men are seen as brave people, doing work for their country.
4) What stereotypes of women can you find in the post-2000s adverts? Give specific examples.
In all the adverts in 2000s onwards portray women as models that have to look pretty in order to appeal to the audience. This shows us that women are looked on as people that have to look pretty to bring attention to themselves.
5) How do your chosen adverts suggest representations of gender have changed over the last 60 years?
In 1950s-2000s, advertising has changed, but not much to make a difference for women. Women are still thought of as less than men and are sexualised even more in adverts after the 2000s.
