Now answer the following questions:
1) At the time of the article, how many Fortnite players were there worldwide? (Bonus question - how many are there now? Try Googling it.)
200m players worldwide but now there are between 1.4 and 1.5 million active players in 2026
2) Why is it so popular? What are the audience pleasures of the game?
It’s free, fun and it has a very silly, offbeat sense of humour. While PUGB has a serious, realistic visual style, Fortnite: Battle Royale has very bright, almost cartoon-like graphics as well as loads of ridiculous items and costumes, such as space suits and dinosaur outfits. You could play with other players in duos and trios and later on squads while communicating with other players.
3) Why might some people criticise Fortnite?
Because parents might not like how its a multiplayer shooting games and that you are talking/playing with strangers. The violence in the games might affect life and would get angry at anything.
4) Copy and paste two comments from 'below the line' of the Guardian article - these are comments written by Guardian readers in response to the feature. Select one comment you agree with and one you disagree with and explain why.
agree :" the game involves, creativity, strategy, team work and problems solving, half the fun is the building and the pure sense of camaraderie with your mates" because the game helps friends with teamwork and think strategically to how to win the game.
disagree : "It is addictive and kids can end up spending quite a lot on those Vbucks" because the game is really addictive and when kids get serious about the game they intend to buy skins in the game. The more they play, the more they might spend as the game is very addictive
